When you lack interaction with a power that is greater than yourself, spiritual tension is present. This lack creates a deep conflict in the mind, negative emotions and tension in the nervous system. Unless or until you develop this strength of self within, you will always feel something is lacking. (Practice begins 0:50)

This practice helps to establish mental relaxation having a beneficial impact on all other levels of the body and mind. When the mind is quiet your autonomic nervous system comes into balance calming the emotions and relaxing the muscular system. (Practice begins 2:10)

Symptoms of emotional stress include hostility, irritability, anger, sadness, crying spells, discouragement and hopelessness, anxiety, temper outbursts, fear, depression, frustration and phobias. With this regular practice you will re-train your mind to automatically make the effort to reduce your emotional stress.

Visualization practices that utilize all of the senses works with the emotional and mental centers in the brain that control the autonomic nervous system helping them relax. Occupying the mind with positive images crowds out stressful thoughts that normally would be creating tension in the nervous system. (Practice begins 0:35)

Progressive Relaxation is a way to train the nervous system to release muscular tension.
When the brain and muscles work together smoothly there is an activation (tightening) and then releasing or relaxing of the muscles.
When the muscles remain activated, the brain keeps sending commands to activate the muscles. We need to break this cycle.

GUIDED HEALING LIGHT VISUALIZATION is a quick eight minute visualization using the imagery of light that can be used for healing. You can use this any time you’re stressed or feeling overwhelmed during the day. Even better, you can establish a daily practice. Doing this daily, establishes a pattern in your body and mind so you can access this visualization quicker and have greater benefits.
RELIEF FROM MENTAL TENSION guided relaxation uses awareness of body to activate parts of the somatosensory cortex of the brain affecting both the brain and body, awareness of breath to increase awareness of energy flowing through your body and visualization of time trusted symbols to evoke impressions from the deeper mind for release of mental tension.
Decision making functions of the brain and areas dedicated to action retreat into the background during yoga nidra practice. This gives the brain rest and allows the available energy to be used for healing and recovery.
In the receptive state created by yoga nidra you are able to correct negative patterns already existing in the brain. Credit: Satyananda Saraswati
Daily yoga nidra practice develops the ability to deeply relax without sleeping. Studies in Denmark done in 2002 determined that the practice of yoga nidra resulted in a decrease in brain activity associated with action and an increase in brain activity associated with rest, relaxation and imagination. During yoga nidra the mind withdraws from wishing to act and the subject becomes the observer.

This is a 20-minute guided imagery for muscle relaxation. Muscle physiology research conducted at Harvard, Cornell and the University of Chicago found that levels of muscular tension could be altered when people imagined themselves performing various events. Credit: Martin Rossman, MD

Thank you so much, Barb. My session was very thought provoking and I was able to address things I had no idea I was even hanging on to. I feel like I'm starting to feel that freedom that we talked about. I don't think I would have been able to come to these realizations without you and I truly thank you with all my heart and being. I will definitely be seeing you again! Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with me.
I was new to yoga when Barb suggested I try a series of classes. I had some things going on in my life and I knew I needed to make a change so I decided why not. Not only did I enjoy going through the process but I learned so much about the practice of yoga and what it has to offer besides the poses. The most amazing part was that I had some breakthroughs in my own life. I don't know if I would have been able to make these huge lifetime changes without the yoga classes and meditation. Thank you so much, Barb, I have a new life!
