This class builds upon Stage One by beginning to 'control' or apply 'restraint' to your breath practice. This is what pranayama means. (Prana Control). (Practice begins at 3:20)
This beginner class prepares you for Alternate Nostril Breathing. The purpose of alternate nostril breathing is to balance your autonomic nervous system so you remain alert and focused yet calm and relaxed. For this reason the practice should be done gradually and never forced or hurried. (Practice begins at 2:10)
These gentle breathing exercises provide practice for beginners to experience activating and purifying the three main energy channels (Nadis) in the subtle body. This should be practiced until you feel comfortable with each exercise for 3 minutes until moving on to Alternate Nostril Breathing. (Exercise begins at 6:24)
These gentle breathing exercises brings your attention to the belly. The belly is home to the second brain; the enteric nervous system (ENS). The belly also has the same substances as the brain including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and glutamate. Therefore, a calm belly has an overall calming affect on the mind and body.
Breathing exercises are part of pranayama yoga in traditional yoga. The asanas (physical exercises) are only one area of study. In this class we will practice Belly Breathing which is a good foundation for pranayama and meditation practice. Herbert Benson's research on Transcendental Meditation in 1975 led to the inclusion of belly breathing into Cognitive Behavior Therapy because of the power to regulate emotions by deepening the breath. (20 minutes)

Thank you so much, Barb. My session was very thought provoking and I was able to address things I had no idea I was even hanging on to. I feel like I'm starting to feel that freedom that we talked about. I don't think I would have been able to come to these realizations without you and I truly thank you with all my heart and being. I will definitely be seeing you again! Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with me.
I was new to yoga when Barb suggested I try a series of classes. I had some things going on in my life and I knew I needed to make a change so I decided why not. Not only did I enjoy going through the process but I learned so much about the practice of yoga and what it has to offer besides the poses. The most amazing part was that I had some breakthroughs in my own life. I don't know if I would have been able to make these huge lifetime changes without the yoga classes and meditation. Thank you so much, Barb, I have a new life!
