CALMING BREATH PRACTICES

This gentle breath practice brings your attention to the belly.  The belly is home to the second brain; the enteric nervous system (ENS).  The belly also has the same substances as the brain including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and glutamate.  Therefore, a calm belly has an overall calming affect on the mind and body. 

BREATHING TO REGULATE EMOTIONS

Breath practices are part of pranayama in traditional yoga.  The asanas (physical exercises) are only one area of study.  In this class we will practice Belly Breathing which is a good foundation for pranayama and meditation practice.  Herbert Benson's research on Transcendental Meditation in 1975 led to the inclusion of belly breathing into Cognitive Behavior Therapy because of the power to regulate emotions by deepening the breath. (20 minutes)
